Some of the greatest matches in the history of the company involved the one and only Ric Flair.

In 1989, he fought Ricky Steamboat three times. In this sort of best of three setting, the first two matches were excellent. The decisions were split, however. In the 40 minute match, the in-ring story telling was exceptional. Flair fought like a man desperate to retain legitimacy, having lost his title belt. Steamboat was desperate to prove himself and end the rivalry once and for all. The match should be remembered as one of the best matches in the WWE history, period.

The early 1990's were a struggle for Flair. The WWE altered the way they presented matches. Instead of story telling within the ring, they veered off in favor of fast-paced, quicker matches. Flair was not suited to work these kind of matches. He was adept at working in ring to develop a story line, to engage in psychological battles that endured long after the physical fight concluded. In 1993, Flair was booked for a match after Sid Vicious was initially tabbed as the combatant. He was slated to fight Vader, a brute known for his sheer strength and power. On paper, this match wouldn't excite many fans at the time, but the superstars delivered a match for the decade. Flair shocked the audience, staying true to his quicker, grappling style. He pulled off the upset after being beaten badly for most of the match, reminding the fans that even in this new atmosphere of power, the agile Nature Boy still remained a force to be reckoned with.
